 Matthew 16:24 (ESV)

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

Taking Up the Cross

DEVOTIONAL

In Jesus’ day, the cross was not a piece of jewelry or a church symbol — it was a brutal instrument of execution. To “take up your cross” meant only one thing: you were walking toward death. When Jesus spoke these words, He had just told His disciples that He Himself would go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed, and rise again (v. 21). Peter recoiled at the thought, but Jesus responded by teaching that following Him means walking the same road.

To take up your cross is not about carrying ordinary burdens or life’s inconveniences. It means a decisive, daily willingness to die to self — to our sinful desires, our pride, our love of comfort, and our clinging to this world. It is a call to follow Christ wherever He leads, even when the path is costly.

Theological Depth:
In the Reformed understanding, this call flows from union with Christ. We have been crucified with Him (Gal. 2:20), buried with Him, and raised with Him (Rom. 6:4–5). Taking up the cross is not an act of self-salvation; it is the fruit of salvation already given. It is the Spirit-empowered response of one who has been redeemed by grace.

Christ carried His cross first — bearing the full wrath of God for our sins. Our cross-bearing is never atoning, but it is imitative. He calls us to walk the path of obedience, sacrifice, and love because He has already secured our life in Him.

Application:
Taking up your cross may mean:

  • Speaking truth with love when silence would be easier.

  • Forsaking a sinful relationship or habit, even if it feels like losing part of yourself.

  • Choosing faithfulness to Christ over approval from the world.

  • Enduring suffering, rejection, or loss because you belong to Him.

Whatever the cost, the cross you carry is not a sign of defeat — it is a sign that you belong to the crucified and risen Lord. The cross is the way to resurrection glory (2 Tim. 2:11–12).

Gospel Hope:
You do not take up your cross alone. The One who calls you to follow has walked the road before you and walks it with you still. And He promises: “Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matt. 16:25). The cross always leads to the crown.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You bore the cross for me and triumphed over sin and death. Teach me to deny myself, to take up my cross daily, and to follow You with joy. Give me courage to walk in Your steps, knowing that the path of the cross is the path to life. Amen.
