Psalm 90:1 (ESV)
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.”
DEVOTIONAL
Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses, the man of God. These words are not from a man lounging in comfort, but from one who wandered in deserts, buried loved ones, led a rebellious people, and knew what it meant to be without a permanent home on this earth. Yet Moses begins his prayer not with complaint, but with this profound declaration: “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.”
In every age, God’s people have faced wildernesses—literal and spiritual. From Abraham leaving his homeland, to Israel in exile, to the church scattered throughout the world today—what sustains us is not a physical home, nor stability in this fleeting world, but the unchanging presence of God Himself.
To say that God is our “dwelling place” is to confess that He is our refuge, our stability, our true home. While earthly homes may crumble and seasons change, the Lord remains our shelter. He is not merely a place we visit in times of need—He is the place where we live, rest, and find our identity.
This verse reminds us that we are not orphans, nor are we ultimately homeless. In Christ, we are brought near to God and made part of His household (Ephesians 2:19). Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us, but even now He is with us, by His Spirit. The presence of God is not a future hope only, but a present reality for those who are in Christ.
So when you feel unsettled, anxious, or like a stranger in this world, remember this: your true home is not a place—it is a Person. And that Person is the eternal, faithful God who has been the dwelling place of His people in every generation. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
🕊️ Prayer
Heavenly Father,
You have been our dwelling place throughout the ages. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. We confess that we often seek comfort and security in what is temporary, and forget that our true refuge is in You alone. Teach our hearts to rest in You—not just in crisis, but every day. Let Your presence be our peace, Your promises our foundation, and Your Son our joy.
We thank You for the gift of Jesus, who opened the way to dwell with You forever. Until we see You face to face, keep us near, keep us faithful, and let us dwell richly in Your Word and Your love.
In Christ’s holy name,
Amen.
