More Than Conquerors

Romans 8:37 (ESV)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

DEVOTIONAL

In this single verse, the Apostle Paul lifts our eyes to see the unshakable hope that belongs to every believer in Christ. It is not a shallow hope built on good days or easy circumstances. Paul does not say we are “more than conquerors” when life is going well—when our health is strong, our relationships are peaceful, and our prayers are answered the way we’d like. No, he says this in the midst of trouble, hardship, persecution, danger, even death itself (Romans 8:35-36).

Paul’s point is this: because of Christ, even our deepest suffering cannot defeat us. It cannot undo the love of God. Through the cross and resurrection, Jesus has already won the victory—not just over sin and death, but over everything that tries to separate us from Him. Because He was counted as a lamb to the slaughter, we are now counted as conquerors. More than conquerors.

Why “more than”? Because we don’t just survive trials; by God’s grace, we come through them with a deeper joy, a firmer faith, and a clearer view of Christ. The devil may come with sword or shame, but he cannot touch the bond sealed in Christ’s blood.

And take note—it is through him who loved us. Not “through our strength,” or “through our willpower,” but through the love of Jesus. His love is not a distant affection but a powerful, present reality. He does not merely help us fight; He has fought for us, and He carries us through every storm.

So when fear creeps in, when sin whispers shame, or when sorrow clouds our path, we remember this: we are not abandoned. We are not defeated. In Christ, we are held, secured, and carried to the end.

Let the world rage, let the trials come—our victory is sure, because our Savior is faithful.

A Prayer of Assurance

Gracious Father,
We praise You for the love that sent Christ to the cross and raised Him in power. Thank You that nothing—not trouble, nor pain, nor even death itself—can separate us from Your love in Him.

When we feel weak, remind us that Christ is strong. When we feel lost, anchor us in the truth that we are more than conquerors—not because of who we are, but because of who He is and what He has done.

Lord, teach our hearts to rest in Your steadfast love. Give us the faith to face trials with courage, not pretending they do not hurt, but trusting that they cannot defeat us. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

In His name we pray,
Amen.
