John 11:25 (ESV)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”
DEVOTIONAL
In the quiet sorrow of a grieving home, Jesus spoke words that shattered the finality of death. Martha, mourning the loss of her brother Lazarus, confessed her faith in the resurrection “on the last day.” But Jesus gently turned her eyes not merely to a future hope—but to Himself. “I am the resurrection and the life.”
This is not just a promise for someday. It is a Person for today.
Christ doesn’t offer resurrection as an abstract concept; He is the resurrection. He doesn’t merely give life; He is life. In Him, death is not the end—it is a defeated enemy. When Jesus raised Lazarus from the grave, He showed that His authority over death is not theoretical. It is real, present, and personal.
This truth comforts the grieving, strengthens the fearful, and revives the weary soul. For the believer, death has no final word. Our bodies may perish, but we will rise. Why? Because our Savior lives. And more than that, because He is life itself.
This is not only about what happens after we die. This is about how we live now. If Jesus is our resurrection and our life, then He is our joy in sorrow, our hope in despair, and our strength in weakness. In union with Him, we already walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4), even as we wait for the day when He will raise our mortal bodies to glory.
So take heart today. Whether you face grief, illness, uncertainty, or fear, remember this: your life is hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3). And the One who holds your life is the same who called a dead man out of the tomb.
He is the resurrection. He is the life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
You are the resurrection and the life. In You we find our hope, not only for the life to come but for this very day. When fear grips us and sorrow weighs us down, remind us that death is no match for Your power. You have conquered the grave, and in You, we too shall live.
Help us trust not in circumstances or outcomes, but in You alone. Strengthen our faith when it feels weak, and lift our eyes to see that You are alive and reigning even now. Teach us to walk in the newness of life You have given us, by Your Spirit.
We praise You, risen Lord, and long for the day when You will wipe away every tear and make all things new.
Until then, keep us abiding in You—our resurrection and our life.
Amen.
