Anchor of the Soul

Hebrews 6:19 (ESV)

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain…”

DEVOTIONAL

In the storms of life—when trials come, when the winds of doubt howl, when the heart is weary and tempted to drift—what keeps us from being swept away? What holds us firm when the world is shifting sand?

The Word of God gives a beautiful answer: we have an anchor. Not a flimsy rope of self-effort. Not a false hope that depends on changing circumstances. But a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul—our living hope in Jesus Christ.

This verse from Hebrews points us to something marvelous: Christ has entered “the inner place behind the curtain”—language that reaches back to the Old Testament temple, where the high priest would go behind the veil to offer sacrifice on behalf of the people. But Jesus is not just a priest who enters temporarily. He is our Great High Priest, who has gone before us and remains there as our intercessor, having torn the curtain in two by His sacrifice on the cross.

This hope is not wishful thinking. It is grounded in the unchanging promise of God, sealed by the blood of Christ, and confirmed by His resurrection. It is hope with substance, tied not to our feelings or faithfulness, but to His.

And because Christ is already there—already in the presence of the Father, already reigning—we are spiritually tethered to Him. The anchor doesn’t keep us from feeling the waves, but it keeps us from drifting into despair. In times of sorrow, in moments of fear, the believer can say, “My soul is anchored in Christ.”

May we cling to Him today—not just when we’re sinking, but in every season—because He is our steady rock, our unshakable hope, our anchor behind the veil.

Prayer:

Gracious Father,
Thank You for the gift of hope that is anchored in Your Son, Jesus Christ. When our hearts are weak and our minds are tossed by waves of fear, remind us that Christ has already entered the Most Holy Place for us. He has made a way where there was no way. He is our sure and steadfast anchor, who holds us even when we feel like letting go.

Lord, teach us to trust in what is unseen—the eternal realities that Christ has secured. Help us to fix our eyes not on the storms, but on the One who rules the wind and the waves. Give us the grace to rest in Your promises, which never fail.

Keep our souls anchored in Christ, until the day we see Him face to face.

In His strong and saving name we pray, Amen.
