Hebrews 12:2 (ESV)
“Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…”
DEVOTIONAL
The Christian life is often described as a race—a long, sometimes grueling journey of endurance. It’s not a sprint, but a lifelong marathon filled with challenges, distractions, and seasons of struggle. And if we try to run it in our own strength or keep our eyes fixed on the wrong things, we can quickly become weary, discouraged, or even tempted to give up.
That’s why this verse is so powerful and essential: “Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…”
Jesus is both the beginning and the end of our faith. He is the founder—the one who first called us, opened our eyes to the truth, and gave us the gift of faith. And He is the perfecter—the one who continues to work in us, shaping us, refining us, and bringing us to completion in Him.
We don’t run the race alone. The One who started the work in us is the One who will finish it (Philippians 1:6). That means we’re not depending on our own willpower to stay faithful. We’re depending on Jesus—His strength, His grace, His endurance, and His love.
So how do we keep going when life gets hard? The verse tells us plainly: look to Jesus. Not to our circumstances. Not to other people. Not even to ourselves. We look to Christ—who for the joy set before Him endured the cross. He didn’t give up on us. And He won’t.
Looking to Jesus means fixing our eyes on Him daily—through prayer, Scripture, worship, and surrender. It means reminding ourselves that He is enough, and that He is with us every step of the way.
So if you’re feeling tired in your faith today, take heart. The race isn’t over, and you don’t have to run it alone. Keep your eyes on Jesus. He started this in you, and He will see you through to the very end.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
You are the Author and Finisher of my faith. Thank You for calling me, saving me, and walking with me through every step of this life.
There are days when I feel weak and weary—when the race feels too long and too hard. But today I choose to lift my eyes and fix them on You. You endured the cross for me. You never gave up. And I trust that You are working in me, even when I don’t see it.
Help me not to be distracted by fear, failure, or fatigue. Strengthen my heart to keep running. Fill me with Your joy, and remind me that I am not alone—you are with me, and You will finish what You began.
In Your faithful name I pray,
Amen.
