The Bread of Life

John 6:35 (ESV)

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger…”

DEVOTIONAL

In this verse, our Lord Jesus speaks to the deepest needs of the human heart—not just our physical hunger, but the soul’s longing for meaning, peace, and life itself. When He declares, “I am the bread of life,” He is not offering a mere metaphor. He is revealing Himself as the only true sustenance for our weary and wandering hearts.

Just as bread was a daily necessity in the ancient world, Christ is essential to our spiritual life. Without Him, our souls remain starved—no matter how much the world offers us in terms of success, pleasure, or possessions. All of it crumbles into dust in the mouth. Only Christ satisfies. Only He fills. Only in Him do we find rest and fullness.

This statement comes in the context of Jesus feeding the five thousand. The crowds had eaten their fill of loaves and fishes, but they followed Jesus hoping for more earthly provision. He pointed them to something far greater: Himself. He said, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life” (John 6:27).

Friend, are you weary? Hungry for something this world cannot give? Come to Christ. He does not turn away the needy. He feeds the soul with His grace, His presence, and His promises. He gave His very body for us on the cross, and now invites us to feast on Him by faith. In Him, our hunger ends—not because life becomes easy, but because He becomes enough.

Let us not nibble at the empty pleasures of this world, but come to the table of grace, where Christ Himself is the bread.

Prayer:

Gracious Father,
We come to You in the name of Jesus, the true bread from heaven. We confess that we have often looked to the world to fill our emptiness. We have tasted its offerings and found them bitter and fleeting. But You, O Lord, offer us Christ—full of grace and truth, sufficient for every need.

Feed us now, Lord—not with things that perish, but with the living bread of Your Son. Teach our hearts to hunger for Him above all else. Strengthen our faith, that we may come daily to Christ, trusting that He alone satisfies.

Thank You for the cross, where Christ gave Himself for us. Thank You for the promise that whoever comes to Him shall not hunger. By Your Spirit, draw us nearer each day until we see our Savior face to face and dine with Him in glory.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
