The Door of the Sheep

John 10:9 (ESV)

“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved…”

DEVOTIONAL

These are not the words of a mere teacher, philosopher, or moral example. They are the words of the Son of God, the Good Shepherd, and the only Mediator between God and man. When Jesus says, “I am the door,” He is declaring something exclusive, yet inviting—narrow, yet open wide to all who will come.

In the ancient Near East, shepherds would often lay themselves down at the entrance of the sheepfold at night, serving literally as the door. No sheep could go out, and no predator could come in, except by going through the shepherd. What a picture of Christ’s tender, vigilant care for His flock. He is both Protector and Gatekeeper. His body was broken so that we might be brought in. He guards us from ultimate harm and leads us into green pastures of peace and eternal life.

“If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.” This is not a vague hope or a sentimental gesture—it is a promise. Salvation is not earned through effort, nor accessed through many doors. There is one way to God, and that way is Jesus. He is not one of many paths; He is the Door. All who come to the Father must come through Him (John 14:6). But take heart—this door is open. It is not locked shut to those who seek mercy. It does not swing closed to the repentant sinner. It beckons with grace.

To enter by Christ is to abandon all other entrances. It is to stop climbing over the wall by our own works or merit. It is to confess that we are needy sheep, not noble saviors. It is to trust His blood, His cross, His resurrection. And the promise? He will be saved. Not might be, not could be. He will be.

Oh, dear soul—do not stand outside the fold. Enter in. Christ has opened the way. Come and live.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, our Door and our Shepherd,
We thank You that You have made a way for sinners to be saved—not by our striving, but by Your sacrifice. You laid down Your life so that we might find life in You.
Forgive us for the times we have looked for other doors—whether through our own pride, our good deeds, or the false promises of this world. Bring us again to the simple, beautiful truth that salvation is found in You alone.
Let us enter daily by You—not just once, but continually resting in Your grace. Protect us, guide us, and lead us beside still waters. Keep us within the fold of Your love until that day when faith becomes sight and we dwell with You forever.

In Your strong and saving name we pray,
Amen.
