The Wisdom of God

1 Corinthians 1:30 (ESV)

“Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God…”

DEVOTIONAL

In a world overflowing with opinions, philosophies, and self-made truths, the Apostle Paul reminds us of something precious and unshakable: true wisdom is not found in the cleverness of man, nor in academic achievement, nor in the popular voices of the age—it is found in a Person: Jesus Christ.

Paul writes to a church that was being seduced by worldly wisdom and the pride of intellect. But he cuts through the noise with divine clarity: Christ Himself is our wisdom. Not merely a wise teacher, not merely someone who imparts wisdom—but He became wisdom for us. In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Colossians 2:3).

Why is this significant? Because we often look elsewhere. In our confusion, we chase advice from the world. In our suffering, we try to reason our way through. In our sin, we try to justify ourselves with clever arguments. But God has declared that the answer to all of it is not found in our intellect, but in His Son.

Christ is the wisdom of God because in Him we see the great plan of redemption. The cross—foolishness to the world—is the very place where God’s wisdom is put on full display. There, justice and mercy meet. There, our sin is paid for, and righteousness is given. The gospel does not appeal to the pride of man, but to the humble heart that confesses: “I need Christ.”

So, beloved, are you confused? Are you longing for direction? Are you wearied by the endless search for clarity and truth? Fix your eyes on Christ. Listen to His Word. Follow His footsteps. He is not merely the means to wisdom—He is wisdom.

As the hymn says:

“Thou, O Christ, art all I want,
More than all in Thee I find…”

A Prayer

Gracious Father,
You are the source of all true wisdom, and in Your mercy, You have given us Christ—not merely as our Savior, but as our very wisdom. Forgive us for the times we seek guidance apart from Him, for trusting in our own understanding rather than leaning on Your Word.

Teach us, by Your Spirit, to rest in Christ as our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Let us boast in nothing but Him. Shape our minds by the truth of Your Word and our hearts by the power of the cross.

When we are confused, anchor us in Your promises. When we are proud, humble us at the foot of the cross. And in all things, may our lives reflect the beauty and brilliance of Your wisdom—found fully and forever in Jesus Christ.

In His holy name we pray,
Amen.
