Colossians 1:15 (ESV)
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”
DEVOTIONAL
How do you see the God you cannot see? The One who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see?
The answer is found in Jesus Christ.
He is the image—the perfect, visible expression—of the invisible God. Not a created image, like idols fashioned by human hands. No, Jesus is the very radiance of God’s glory (Hebrews 1:3), fully God in human flesh. In Christ, God has made Himself known—not through shadows or symbols, but in a Person who walked among us, full of grace and truth.
When we look at Christ, we see the heart of the Father: His compassion for the outcast, His righteousness that confronts sin, His tenderness toward the broken, His authority over nature and demons, and His mercy at the cross. In every word, every action, every step—Christ is showing us who God is.
To call Him the “firstborn of all creation” is not to say He was created (as some falsely teach), but that He holds first place—preeminent in rank, authority, and inheritance. He is Lord of all, the eternal Son through whom all things were made.
This means that the God who might seem distant or hidden is, in truth, deeply knowable. In Christ, the mystery of God is unveiled. You do not need to guess at God’s character. Look to Jesus. In His face, the invisible becomes visible. The unknowable becomes near.
Worship Him. Behold Him. Trust Him.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
You are the image of the invisible God—God with us, God made known. In You, the Father’s heart is revealed. When I feel lost or unsure of who God is, remind me to look again at You.
Thank You for stepping into our world to make the unseen seen, the distant near, and the holy accessible. Forgive me for the times I forget Your nearness or try to find truth apart from You. Teach me to treasure You above all else and to see in Your face the glory of the Father.
May Your image be not only before my eyes but impressed upon my heart, shaping me more and more into Your likeness.
Amen.
