Hebrews 7:25 (ESV)
“…he always lives to make intercession for them.”
DEVOTIONAL
What a comfort these words bring to weary hearts. Our Lord Jesus Christ is not a distant Savior who accomplished salvation and then stepped away. No—He is alive, risen, ascended, and ever active in His priestly office. He always lives to make intercession for His people. This is not a passing duty or a forgotten promise; it is His ongoing ministry at the right hand of the Father.
The writer of Hebrews is drawing us to consider the superiority of Christ’s priesthood. Unlike the priests of old, who were limited by death and sin, Jesus lives forever. His priesthood is unchangeable. And because of this, He is able to save to the uttermost—fully, completely, and forever—those who draw near to God through Him.
But notice especially how He saves: not only by the sacrifice of Himself on the cross, but also by His continual intercession. Even now, as you read these words, the Lord Jesus is praying for you. He pleads His finished work before the Father. When you are weak, when your faith trembles, when guilt weighs heavy—Jesus is not silent. He speaks for you.
Think on that: the very Son of God, with nail-scarred hands, is your Advocate. When Satan accuses, Christ defends. When we fall into sin, He does not cast us out, but intercedes with mercy, pointing to His once-for-all sacrifice. This intercession is not because the Father is unwilling to forgive, but because in God’s wisdom and love, the Son’s priestly work is part of our assurance. The Father hears the Son, and in Him, we are eternally secure.
This should produce in us both deep comfort and fresh zeal. If Christ is praying for us, we are never alone. If He intercedes for us, no condemnation remains. And if He is always living to intercede, then we always have access to God through Him.
A Prayer of Thanks for Our High Priest
Gracious Father,
We praise You for giving us such a High Priest—holy, innocent, unstained, and exalted above the heavens. Thank You for Your Son, who offered Himself once for all, and now lives forever to intercede for us.
Lord Jesus, we marvel at Your love. You did not only die for us, but You live for us. Even now, when we are frail and faltering, You speak our names before the Father. You carry our burdens, You plead our cause, and You never grow weary in doing so.
Forgive us when we forget Your nearness. Forgive us when we live as though we must earn what You have already secured. Teach us to rest in Your finished work, and to draw near with confidence, knowing You ever live to make intercession for us.
Holy Spirit, seal these truths to our hearts. Make us bold in prayer, holy in life, and joyful in Christ. And may we never forget that our hope is anchored not in our strength, but in our living Savior, our faithful High Priest.
In His precious name we pray,
Amen.
